DragonCon Shopping – Posters and Pop

The first two times we went to the dealers building, I just window shopped and bought a few items for friends and family. On Monday morning, on our way out of town, we hit the dealers building for some lightning shopping. Having only a little over an hour, I shamelessly abandoned my wife, friend, and child, to find some loot.

Vincent Price posters

I picked up some 11″x17″ Vincent Price posters for the wall. These will join my 11×17 Theater of Blood and my full-size original The Last Man on Earth poster (Thanks as always, Maya!).

Universal Frankenstein

I also picked up a couple Universal Frankenstein posters.

Mummy poster

Then I rounded it out with Hammer’s The Mummy poster and one of the first Lovecraft adaptations, The Dunwich Horror. The Haunted Palace (see Vincent Price above) is advertised as an Edgar Allan Poe picture but is actually based on a Lovecraft story with a Poe poem tacked on to the beginning and end.

Finally, since my wife and friends bought me a ton of Funko Pop! figures for my birthday, I couldn’t resist this one of Pennywise from Stephen King’s IT. Even the cuteness looks creepy.

P.S. They all float down here…..

Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

The Fugitive

My wife and I have annual passes to Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. We have ridden the Nantahala run dozens of times. It crosses a wonderful trestle bridge on the way to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. That trestle bridge was featured in the Sandra Bullock movie, Forces of Nature. Some of the cars were featured in the movie My Fellow Americans.

The Fugitive

We finally got to take the Tuckaseegee run the other day. It runs past the spot where the train wreck for The Fugitive (1993) was filmed and the bus and train cars are still there. The Tuckaseegee run also has a nice tunnel though the Nantahala run has much better scenery.

Happy Black Friday!

I think it’s a real shame that the major retailers are now open on Thanksgiving. On the other hand, those retail employees join the movie theater and restaurant employees already working that day as well as the hard-working grocery employees catering to all the people who forgot the basting butter or suddenly realized that fresh cranberry sauce is awesome but the canned stuff is junk.

My wife and I waited to do our shopping today, Black Friday. She loves the early morning specials. I hate the crowds but she’s taking me to my favorite used book emporium, McKay’s, afterward.

McKay’s is a used book/CD/DVD/game store the size of a Wal-Mart. Below is one of my favorite walls, graphic novels.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day, Y’All!

Okay you’ve eaten that massive sleep-inducing meal but it’s way too early to go to bed and you have no interest in the football games. What to do…what to do.

You can watch some truly awful turkey movies – anything by Asylum should suffice, say Sharknado?

Optionally you can watch a Disney double feature of revisionist history, Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World though if you are a history buff then it might upset that nice meal in your tummy.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor Dark World

My long-suffering wife took me to Thor: The Dark World over the weekend. We had a lot of fun although the movie was definitely a mixed bag.

* Reducing Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) from a scientist to a love-sick stalker/catalyst who is only defined by her man

* Way too many lasers and spaceships

* A rather bland villain and enemies

On the other hand, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are not only nice to look at but have good chemistry, Rene Russo gets a nice action scene, Kat Dennings provides some nice comic relief (though the best laugh by far was from a star cameo).

As with Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World is fun but not a good movie.

Be aware that there are two after-credits scenes a la The Avengers. Also if you go to the 3D version, you get a five-minute preview of Captain America.

While we were there, we got the Thor “plastic combo” – 2 large sodas in plastic cups and a large popcorn in a plastic bucket. I love this combo at Epic and try to collect each one they put out. The cups are a nice quality heavy plastic.

Also one final note on Dumas week: I forgot to mention that Thor is currently showing on Netflix. While Thor is not based on Dumas’ works, it is clear that The Three Musketeers was an inspiration for The Warriors Three (Volstagg, Fandral the Dashing, and Hogun the Grim), a fixture in Thor since the late 60s.

Halloween Keeps Getting Better – Pacific Rim

Blu-Ray.com is a board I frequent, mostly for news and reviews of Blu-Rays. I also periodically flip through the posted pictures of users home theaters and drool away. They periodically run drawings for FREE Blu-Rays. After being on that board for many years, I finally won one of the drawings.

Pacific Rim

I won the Blu-Ray for the prettiest movie of the summer, Pacific Rim (Star Trek Into Darkness was a close second). I won on the weekend and received my Blu-Ray on Wednesday via FedEx. Wow! Even the cover is gorgeous, with a lenticular kaiju alternating with one of the jaegers.

Halloween, Groupon, The Fly and The Vincent Price Collection

My loving wife bought me The Vincent Price Collection from Scream Factory for Halloween. Scream Factory is an offshoot of Shout Factory. Currently it’s a gasp-inducing $69.99 on Amazon but she bought ours on Groupon for $39.99.

Vincent Price Collection

The collection consists of Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death, The Haunted Palace, Witchfinder General, and The Abominable Dr. Phibes – all on Blu-Ray. They come in a nice plastic case with individual mounts as well as a nice booklet with photos and stories and a slipcover box.

The restorations on these movies are incredible. They are so beautiful in high-definition. I haven’t listened to any of the commentaries but one of the extras on five of the movies is a set of introductions and closing comments by Vincent Price. These were done for PBS back in the 80s and are simply wonderful.

I highly recommend this set if you are at all a fan of Vincent Price.

The Fly

I also picked up the Blu-Ray of The Fly (1958) at Best Buy for $9.99 ($4.99 after coupon). That transfer too is beautiful and has as an extra, A&E’s Biography of Vincent Price. What a wonderful Halloween.
